Policies

In order for the professional relationship to work well, it is important that both the client and the therapist have a clear understanding of the policies that will determine the scope of their working relationship. To clarify and explain what the client can expect from the therapist and what the therapist will need from the client, the following policies have been developed. It is important the client be adequately informed about all the procedures relating to therapeutic massage in order to provide informed consent to the massage practitioner prior to the massage session.

Nature of Services Offered
Therapeutic massage is for the purpose of enhancing health and promoting body balance and function. Massage can reduce muscle tension, reduce the effects of daily stress, and aid in stimulating the natural restorative processes of the body. These methods are not intended to diagnose or treat any specific or pre-existing condition. Certain conditions require the written permission from the client’s physician before treatment will be performed. Massage is a beneficial addition to many other therapies that deal with chronic pain, circulation difficulties, and joint problems provided that the progress is supervised by a licensed medical professional. Massage and its modalities’ benefits are cumulative; therefore, it is best to receive treatments on a routine basis in order to reduce the physical stress that builds up in the body. Treatments on a regular schedule combined with gentle stretching, exercise, and other self-help methods are necessary to feel the cumulative effects.

Appointments

Appointments may be made via e-mail or by telephone. A working telephone number and street address is required at the time of scheduling for safety reasons. If possible, once a date and time has been decided upon a confirmation e-mail with all the pertinent information about the scheduled session will be e-mailed. It is the client’s responsibility to review and respond with an acknowledgement or with corrections. Regular and repeat clients get priority in scheduling.

LATE APPOINTMENT POLICY:  If you show late to an appointment you will still receive a massage if time permits, or at a reduced time at the full charge.  More than 15 minutes late is considered a Broken Appointment.  If you are running late a phone call is appreciated. If I am late then you will receive a reduction in fee for the session. If I am more than 15 minutes late you will receive the remaining time for no charge and 50% off the next session.

BROKEN APPOINTMENT POLICY: At least 24 hour notice is required to change or cancel an appointment. If you fail to do this you are obligated to pay for the session in full.

Respect of Client Boundaries
In this partnership it is important that you are open and honest with the me. Feedback about the effectiveness of the work, situations that may have been uncomfortable, massage techniques that were or were not enjoyable, etc. is all very important. I need to know of any discomfort when it happens. Sometimes it is hard to remember sensitive areas until they are touched. Also, I need to know if there are any areas that you would like to be focused on, or to be avoided. At any time you have the right to end the session. It is understandable that the closeness of the massage relationship may, on occasion, be interpreted as sensual. This is a physical response that is part of the natural relaxation process, and only lasts for a few moments before the physical sensations shift to a deep feeling of relaxation.

Confidentiality and Conversation
The conversation between the massage therapist and the client is confidential. The client may or may not choose to talk during the massage. The client can feel free to discuss whatever they choose and can ask for the therapist’s expertise when appropriate. But, discussions of a religious or political nature are discouraged.

Professional Boundaries
In order for the me to best serve you, the client, honest disclosure of any situation that may interfere with safe, nurturing, nonjudgmental, nonsexual touch must be considered. I need to consider your personal needs, biases, fears, concerns and limitations. Other contraindications or situations may come up and are typically covered in the standard restrictions for receiving a massage. Any situation arising that would prevent me from performing with beneficial intent will be discussed with you. At some time the client’s records may be required to be released under a court order.
